Things You Need To Know About General Vaccinations

Along with the times, deadly viruses and bacteria also develop rapidly. Viruses and bacteria that carry disease and cause death continue to exist today. Viruses and bacteria can spread quickly to those who are not protected by vaccination. This condition is the reason why you should get general vaccinations. The disease can carry over when people travel all over the world. At that time, we will see how sickness also moves too.

Vaccines Keep You Healthy

The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised you to vaccinate for life. General vaccination can protect you from the danger of infection.

If you miss the vaccine, you make yourself susceptible to various dangerous infections caused by viruses and bacteria, such as pneumonia, flu, herpes, and even hepatitis.

Getting vaccinated can save you from death. Every year, about 50,000 US adults are dying from diseases that can be prevented by general vaccination.

The vaccine is designed to prevent the entry of disease into your body. Some vaccines are made from disabled viruses. The attenuated virus works against various viruses and bacteria that attack your body’s immunity.

Whoever you are, healthy young people, children, babies, and even parents have a high risk for serious infections. While you are young and healthy, being vaccinated keeps you fit. When you are sick, your child and your parents may also get the disease you are carrying. Therefore, they also need to get vaccinated.

Mandatory Vaccinations for Children in Indonesia

Every child in Indonesia must get routine vaccinations. The Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI – Indonesian Pediatric Society) recommends routine childhood general vaccinations in Indonesia. IDAI recommends vaccinations for 16 different diseases, 5 of which are mandatory. Compulsory vaccination is given free of charge to all participants of national health insurance (BPJS).

Compulsory vaccination for children in Indonesia are:

  1. Tuberculosis (TB): BCG vaccine must be given to infants before the age of 3 months. Several western countries have stopped offering these vaccines because TB rates in these countries are low. Your child must get this vaccine if he moves to Indonesia. You can consult your pediatrician to find out if your child needs a tuberculin sensitivity test before getting the BCG vaccine.
  2. Hepatitis B: This vaccine will be given within 12 hours after birth. Three more doses will be given later. If the mother is HBsAg positive, the baby will be given the HB immunoglobulin vaccine as well.
  3. Polio: Babies will be given this vaccine within a few days after birth. Subsequent doses are given at 2, 3, and 4 months.
  4. DTP: Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis vaccines will be given six weeks after birth. Further doses will be given in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th month later. At the age of 12 years will be given an additional booster.
  5. Measles: Your child will receive this vaccine for the first time at the age of 9 months. The second dose will be given at the age of 18 months but is not needed if you have received the MMR vaccine before.

Travel Vaccinations for Safer Trips

Anyone who likes to travel abroad must get a travel vaccination. Consult with doctors and clinics that handle travelers. Your doctor will look at your past general vaccination history, how long your trip will take, and what activities can affect your medical condition.

Most vaccines will not give you immunity for up to two weeks after being given. For this reason, you should visit a doctor four to eight weeks before your trip. International regulations require travelers to get vaccinated before visiting countries with the Yellow Fever Zone, such as several South American countries, Africa, including Southeast Asia.

Vaccinations You Must Get Before Visiting Southeast Asia

  1. Tetanus Single Booster: This vaccination is only given if you never get it in the last ten years.
  2. Hepatitis A: Just one dose gives you protection for up to one year. A booster will be given in the next 12 months so that your body gets protection from the hepatitis A virus for 20 years.
  3. Typhoid: This vaccine is given to those of you who travel less than one week, and only visit developed cities. This treatment will provide you with protection for the next three years as a single injection.
  4. Rabies: You will be given this vaccine as many as three injections. The rabies vaccine must be given for those of you who intend to visit several exotic tourist destinations in Indonesia, such as Bali and Lombok. In Bali, there has been a rabies epidemic over the past few years.
