Raising a newborn in Bali during the Covid-19 pandemic

Though the number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia, including Bali, has significantly decreased in the past several weeks compared to the previous most severe months of July and August, or even September 2021, the current situation is indeed still far from ideal.

Given the above, there are so many questions and concerns among parents about the safety of their babies. All of them are valid questions and must-know information for all parents with babies.

In this article, we would like to answer the following common questions that are often asked by parents in Bali. It is related to keeping their baby safe during the Covid-19 pandemic.

What happens if my baby gets infected with Covid-19?

Knowing that babies can be more vulnerable to infections, it’s only normal to be concerned about the scary possibility of your baby contracting Covid-19. Experts are yet to find out about all the effects of the virus in babies, especially the long-term impacts. So far, we do know that healthy babies do not get as sick as adults do when infected with Covid-19.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), evidence has shown that children are not at higher risk than adults and that adults have made up most of the known cases. However, parents have to keep in mind that babies with medical vulnerabilities may require more specific care. If your baby is born with a health problem, please make sure that you consult your pediatrician soon. This is to take the best precautions related to Covid-19.

What are the signs of Covid-19 in babies?

As aforementioned, experts have shared that most babies show milder symptoms of Covid-19 compared to adults. In some cases, babies infected with the virus did not even show any symptoms at all. However, it is also true that there have been rare cases of babies who experienced severe symptoms to the point hospitalization was necessary.

Therefore, parents must be able to recognize symptoms of Covid-19 in their babies. The Covid-19 symptoms in children generally include a fever, cough, shortness of breath, runny nose, diarrhea, vomiting, and fatigue. If you think that your baby displays the above symptoms, act fast in getting in touch with the pediatrician to find out if a Covid-19 test is necessary.

What should I do to keep my baby safe?

Keeping your baby safe during the pandemic requires similar health and safety protocols as you have to implement to keep yourself safe. Thus, make sure that you always practice social distancing for your baby. Avoid your baby from having contact with others whenever possible.  All in all, take good hygiene to the next level.

After your baby has reached several weeks of age or depending on your pediatrician’s advice, it’s okay to take your baby out for a stroll. Of course, you must avoid crowded places. Also, set your boundaries to kindly discourage others from coming close to your baby, no matter how cute they say your baby is! Also, keep in mind that babies should not wear face masks. In fact, children under two years of age are at a health risk from mask-wearing.

Is it safe to breastfeed my baby during the Covid-19 Pandemic?

According to the Academy of American Pediatrics (AAP), it is safe to breastfeed your baby during the pandemic. That even counts for mothers infected with Covid-19 while, of course, taking safety precautions to prevent passing the disease to their baby. Though experts have also assured that there is no suspicion that Covid-19 can be transmitted through breast milk, the concern related to breastfeeding is mainly about close contact and skin-to-skin contact. Therefore, mothers need to wear a mask and maintain good hand hygiene while breastfeeding.

We hope that you’re savoring each moment with your bundle of joy despite today’s challenges. We also hope that you and your little family stay safe and healthy. And at last, in case of any Covid-19 signs in your baby or yourself, make sure to seek immediate medical care.
