Four Simple New Year’s Resolution Ideas for a Healthier 2021

There is no doubt that 2020 has been a challenging year for all of us. Therefore, we do understand that sticking to your last new year’s resolutions was probably not one of your top priorities amidst the stressful pandemic life.

However, you should not be discouraged from setting your intention to achieve certain goals in the coming year. If anything, our experiences throughout 2020 have taught us that self-care is incredibly important for each one of us.

Set your resolutions for 2021, and maybe this time you can stick to them! Make sure to keep them realistic, practical, and easily attainable. Here’s a list of our favorite new year’s resolutions that are simple yet pretty perfect for a healthier 2021!

  1. Drink more water

Despite the different opinions among experts, the most common recommendation for water intake is 2 liters or 8 glasses per day. The exact amount of water that we need to consume daily to prevent dehydration highly depends on several factors such as where you live, the current temperature, your diet, your health, and how active you are.

If you realize that you need to up your water intake without even having to consider the above factors, make sure that you always have a water bottle at your desk and carry one with you when you go out. You can also make great use of a hydration app such as Hydro Coach or WaterMinder.

  1. Sit less, move more, feel good!

Many of us sit more than considered to be healthy. While often overlooked, sitting too much may cause negative effects on our health. If your job requires you to sit in front of a computer for long hours every day, setting a resolution for a ten-minute walk a day can make a significant difference for your health.

Did you know that it takes approximately 10 minutes to walk 1000 steps? A daily 1000-step walk is a great start! And from there, you can set a higher daily goal. Enjoy the feel-good endorphins as well as the excellent health benefits this daily exercise has for your metabolism, heart, brain, joints, and more.

  1. Limit your screen time

While many adults manage to be pretty strict to their children when it comes to screen time, those same people may not be the wisest in managing their own, may that be on their phones or computers. Whether you are aware of it or not, being tuned in 24/7 causes us a great deal of stress.

Various studies have presented that spending too much time on your devices, especially on social media, has been linked to psychological issues such as depression and anxiety. In 2021, remember to limit your screen time, unplug, and take time to relax properly.

  1. Cut down on sugar!

Too much sugar increases your risk of heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. But how much sugar is too much sugar? Sadly, there is no simple way to answer that. While the American Heart Association limits the amount of added sugar per day to 37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons for men and 25 grams or 6 teaspoons per day for women, not everyone can have this amount of sugar. Some people should even avoid having any added sugar in their daily diet.

As our body has zero need for added sugar, cutting back on sugar is a very healthy thing to do. You can start by being more mindful, and gradually yet consistently replace some of your sugary snacks with much healthier options such as fruits!

Those are the four achievable new year’s resolutions for a healthier year that are manageable to keep! Ready to give it a go? Here’s to a happy and healthy 2021!
