Three Simple Exercises for Stress Relief

Stress is usually a reaction to mental or emotional pressure. It is an inevitable part of life. While stress is indeed necessary to motivate us to achieve things in our daily life, too much stress is, without doubt, overwhelming. Sadly, it is very common for someone to feel unable to cope with this mental or emotional pressure. And that’s a problem that can lead to other psychological issues.

A survey commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation (UK) showed that 74% of UK adults had felt so stressed at some point over the last year that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope. The study also found that 16% of adults had self-harmed as a result of stress. And keep in mind that even without self-harming, stress can already lead to physical pain.

Though life on the island of Bali might seem like living the dream to some, it surely does not make you immune to stress. It does, though, offer you astonishing beaches where you can exercise to manage and even reduce stress.

The following are simple exercises that are great ways to relieve stress. As for which gorgeous Bali spot you’d choose as the setting, we leave that to you!

1. Yoga

Many yoga poses are excellent forms of strength training. Therefore, yoga is considered an exercise that increases flexibility and resilience, relieving physical tension. While that part alone is enough of a reason to opt for yoga for stress, the deep breathing techniques used in yoga also help your body to relax. Furthermore, studies have also found that yoga reduces blood pressure.

Hatha yoga is often recommended for stress, as it is less athletic than other styles such as Vinyasa or Bikram. Whichever style you choose, consider going for sessions on the beach or maybe a beautiful yoga shala overlooking the Bali rice fields. Since the goal is to relax, why not go all out, right? However, if you don’t have the time or energy for all that, yoga at home may be the perfect option for you.

2. Walking

Not a big fan of yoga? Or are you overwhelmed by simply thinking about the poses you’ll have to pull off? In that case, walking is perhaps better suited for you. No classes, no need to pick up new skills, no equipment. Quite stress-free, isn’t it?

A study in the UK found that walking in green spaces can put the brain into a meditative state. That means that walking outdoors can calm your mind. Furthermore, walking boosts endorphins, one of the feel-good hormones which can reduce stress hormones.

Experts recommend you start small and slowly increase the duration and frequency of your walks. To manage stress, aim for five 30-minute walks a week.

3. Swimming

Swimming is an effective way to relieve stress. You might have noticed that being in the water alone, especially on a bright and beautiful Bali day, can indeed feel therapeutic. Well, you’re not wrong. And to maximize the relaxing effect of swimming, try to pay close attention to the rhythm of your swimming strokes, as they almost have a meditative effect.

Furthermore, researchers at the University of Exeter (UK) have been investigating how water helps boost mental health and recently found that even watching a video of the ocean while exercising on a stationary bicycle might elevate your mood. On that note, if you happen to be in Bali, it might be time to go to your favorite pool, preferably with an ocean view!
