Self-Care While Working from Home during the Coronavirus Pandemic

Working from home is undoubtedly an excellent solution that has allowed us to perform our jobs while strictly implementing social distancing guidelines amid this pandemic. However, keep in mind that working from home presents its own challenges that are unfortunately quite easy to overlook. Here are some simple yet significant habits that you need to put and/or keep in action to take good care of yourself while you work from home.

1. Keep a consistent sleep schedule and get enough sleep

Given the stress level of today’s daily life, it is normal to feel a little more tired than usual. Try to listen to what your body is telling you and allow yourself 7-9 hours of sleep. You can take advantage of the fact that you don’t need to spend time commuting, and wake up a little bit late while going to bed at your regular bedtime.

While that sounds ideal, an expert from Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine in North Carolina, USA, also explained that when a person suddenly spends more time at home, sleep schedules may indeed become impacted as we adjust to this change. It was further pointed out that maintaining the same wake time and bedtime contributes to a person’s sleep quality. Therefore, keeping a consistent sleep schedule equals an important aspect of self-care.

2. Set up your work station

Though it might sound tempting to work from the comfort of your couch or bed, experts agree that such choices aren’t exactly helpful for your brain to focus on work. Being new to the work from home system, many of us don’t have a designated work station at home yet. However, you can choose a spot and simply set up your basic work station in any corner of your home, preferably in a spot where you can get as much natural light as possible.

If you don’t own a work chair and are currently on a tight budget, you can always buy a lumbar support pad for your regular chair. Try to keep your work area as tidy as you can, and you’ll notice how effective it is to help you stay focused and motivated.

3. Take regular short breaks and set a workout time

When working from home, we naturally move less as we don’t commute and aren’t set in a regular office setting where we walk a significant number of steps a day to reach, let’s say, the water dispenser, our co-workers, meeting rooms, etc. That being said, while working from home it becomes much more essential for us to stay mindful about taking short breaks to move our body, stretch our legs, relax our mind and reenergize our brain. You can make a cup of tea, refill your glass of water, take some deep breaths, prepare a healthy snack, or do other things that take your focus off work for a moment.

Furthermore, during this stressful time, every single one of us can highly benefit from regular exercise. If you can’t or don’t want to commit to a daily workout routine, you can always choose a routine that suits you best and make the most of it.

While we know that a part of Bali’s population has recently left their work from home status and embraced the new normal, many of us are still working from home. We sincerely hope that you practice great self-care while working from home and throughout your new normal days too!
