How to Stay Healthy During Extremely Hot Weather

Staying healthy during extremely hot weather doesn’t have to be complicated. By drinking plenty of water, dressing appropriately, eating light meals, and knowing the warning signs of heat-related illnesses, you can enjoy your summer safely and comfortably. However, during periods of extreme heat, particularly in the dry season from April to October, staying well requires more than just sunscreen and a beach hat.

Understanding how to stay healthy during extremely hot weather (in tropical destinations in Bali) is essential for preventing heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Here are the basics everyone needs to know how to stay healthy during extremely hot weather:

Hydration is key!

Staying hydrated is your first line of defense. In high temperatures, your body loses more fluids through sweat, increasing your risk of dehydration. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (United States), regardless of your activity level, during hot weather, you will need to increase your fluid intake.

Water is the best option, but electrolyte-rich drinks like coconut water or sports drinks are also great for replenishing lost minerals.

Furthermore, you should avoid consuming alcohol and caffeine excessively, both of which can dehydrate you. And if you are engaging in outdoor activities, do not forget to carry a reusable water bottle and drink regularly, even when not thirsty.

Dress and protect appropriately

Clothing plays an essential role in regulating your body temperature. Therefore, it is always best to opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing that helps your body breathe and reflect heat. In hot and humid climates, natural fabrics like cotton or linen are the most ideal options.

Also, protect your skin from UV rays. The World Health Organization warns that UV radiation is strongest under cloudless skies and more intense at higher altitudes and near the equator. Yes, that does indeed include tropical regions like Bali. Thus, do not skip on wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapply it every two hours, and wear hats and sunglasses for added protection.

Adjust your activity schedule

In tropical climates, the hottest part of the day typically falls between 11 am and 3 pm. Therefore, try limiting any strenuous activities during these hours. Consider scheduling your outdoor activities or workouts for earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.

During the hottest hours, you can enjoy a long lunch in the shade or an air-conditioned space, with an incredible view.  And if you must be outside during peak heat, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Recognize warning signs of heat-related conditions.

When you’re in Bali during its hottest days of the year, you must be able to recognize early symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and excessive sweating. If untreated, it can escalate to heatstroke, a medical emergency that can be life-threatening.

The Mayo Clinic notes that heatstroke can occur if your body temperature rises to 40 °C or higher. Immediate steps, such as moving to a cooler place, hydrating, and using cold compresses, can be lifesaving.

Eat light

Did you know that heavy meals generate more internal heat? So, while in Bali, try to opt for more light, nutritious local dishes like gado-gado, and maybe indulge in those colorful, delicious smoothie bowls. These healthy dishes not only help cool you down, but also support digestion and energy levels.

Extreme heat does not have to disrupt your tropical adventure. With the proper precautions, you can enjoy your stay in places like Bali safely and comfortably, even during its hottest days. So, keep cool, listen to your body, and get the best out of your tropical experience!
