Covid 19 Myth

COVID-19 Myths to Ignore

Following the first confirmed cases of the new Coronavirus in Indonesia on March 2, 2020, Bali’s local authorities soon announced COVID-19 cases found on the island, causing Bali to enter the next level of preventive and protective measures against this novel Coronavirus. While we are all struggling with the various challenges, uncertainties, changes, and adjustments during this pandemic, our social media feed has been flooded with tons of information, both from credible sources and unfortunately also with those containing myths and hoax.

As our present days are challenging as they are, the last thing we need right now is to run around trying hard to prevent ourselves and loved ones from getting infected with COVID-19 through measures that turn out to be myths. Knowing your facts is as important as knowing your myths! And in this article, we’ll focus on the most popular ones that belong to the latter.

Myths About COVID-19 You Must Ignore

Myth #1: Spraying disinfectants all over your body kills the virus!

This one is a big no! In fact, spraying chemical disinfectants such as alcohol or chlorine all over your body can be harmful to your skin, mucous membranes and even clothes. Disinfectants are meant to be used on surfaces, and even then, you still have to make sure that you use them properly and safely.

Myth #2: The sun & high temperatures prevent you from contracting COVID-19.

Despite what you might have read on those posts that are going around on social media, exposing yourself to the sun or temperatures higher than 25°C does not prevent you from contracting COVID-19.

Myth #3:  Hold your breath and prove you’re okay!

Another popular Coronavirus myth says that if you can hold your breath for 10 seconds or more without coughing or experiencing any discomfort, you can assume that you are not infected with COVID-19 and that your lungs are also healthy. Aside from being untrue, this breathing exercise can also be dangerous.

Myth #4: The new Coronavirus can be transmitted through mosquitos as well!

Until today, scientists and the World Health Organization have both stated that the new Coronavirus is a respiratory virus that spreads from person to person in close proximity through droplets of saliva or mucus from an infected person which are dispersed in the air or on surfaces by coughing or sneezing. Thus, mosquitos do not take part in spreading the Coronavirus.

Myth #5: It’s good to drink more alcohol these days.

Some people seem to believe that during this pandemic having one too many equals being kind to your body. While it might be a convenient theory, drinking alcohol does not protect you against COVID-19. Furthermore, regardless of the pandemic, excessive alcohol consumption can increase your risk of health problems.

The list of Coronavirus-related myths is growing longer every day now, and we’ve only covered what we consider to be the top five in terms of popularity and how misleading they are. We highly suggest you to choose your sources of information wisely. And if you feel like you are experiencing the common symptoms of the COVID-19 infection, please contact your local healthcare provider. Stay safe, everyone!
